Government Plans Standard Edible Oil Pack Sizes to Make Price Comparison Easier

Consumers may soon find it easier to compare edible oil prices on store shelves as the Central Government is preparing to introduce norms for standardising edible oil pack sizes across the country.

The proposed move comes in response to the increasing use of non-standard packaging formats such as 850 ml, 875 ml, 900 ml and 950 ml packs. While these pack sizes have become common in the market, industry experts believe they often make it difficult for consumers to accurately compare product prices and determine the actual value they are receiving.

By introducing standard pack sizes, the government aims to improve pricing transparency and help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions. The initiative is also expected to create a level playing field for manufacturers, ensuring that competition is driven by product quality, purity and value rather than packaging strategies.

Industry leaders have welcomed the proposal. Vivek Puri, Managing Director of Puri Oil Mills Limited, stated that consumers deserve clear and comparable pricing, adding that standardisation would strengthen trust in packaged edible oils and simplify product comparisons.

Beyond consumer benefits, the move could also support sustainability efforts. Multiple pack sizes often require separate bottle moulds, labels and packaging formats, increasing manufacturing complexity and material usage. Standardisation could streamline production processes and potentially reduce avoidable plastic consumption.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader focus on consumer protection, transparent labelling and sustainable business practices. Although the proposed norms have not yet been formally notified, industry observers believe the reform could bring greater clarity, accountability and confidence to one of India’s most important food categories.

If implemented, standardised edible oil packaging could mark a significant step toward a more transparent marketplace—benefiting consumers, manufacturers and the environment alike.
