Uttar Pradesh Bans Dairy Analogues and Orders Strict Action Against Adulterated Products

Dairy

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a statewide ban on analogue dairy products, including paneer, ghee and khoya, as part of a stricter crackdown on dairy adulteration and the use of non-dairy ingredients.

The move aims to strengthen food safety, consumer protection and the authenticity of dairy products across the state. Food safety authorities have been directed to take stringent action against manufacturers, distributors and sellers found using adulterants, harmful chemicals or foreign fats in dairy products.

Harmful Substances Detected

Enforcement inspections in several districts have reportedly identified substances such as refined oils and fats, soy-based ingredients, detergents, talcum powder, titanium dioxide, liquid glucose, hydrogen peroxide and various neutralisers in milk and dairy products.

The presence of such substances has raised concerns over the authenticity and safety of products being sold as conventional dairy.

Strict Action Against Violators

Under the new enforcement measures, authorities can seize and destroy adulterated dairy products found at manufacturing facilities.

Businesses found systematically producing or selling adulterated products may face criminal proceedings and FIRs under applicable laws. Food licences or registrations may also be suspended immediately when serious violations are established.

Authorities can further issue emergency prohibition orders to stop operations at establishments considered to pose a food-safety risk.

Out-of-State Products Also Under Scrutiny

The action will also cover dairy products manufactured outside Uttar Pradesh.

If laboratory testing confirms that products entering the state contain harmful chemicals, adulterants or foreign fats, authorities can prohibit their sale within Uttar Pradesh.

The Food Safety Commissioner has been directed to intensify surveillance of milk and milk-product manufacturing, distribution and supply networks.

Growing Crackdown on Dairy Analogues

Uttar Pradesh’s decision comes amid similar action against dairy analogues and adulterated dairy products in several other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

The crackdown is particularly significant for markets such as paneer, ghee and khoya, where cheaper non-dairy ingredients can be used to reduce production costs.

What This Means for the Dairy Industry

The stricter enforcement could benefit genuine dairy manufacturers by creating a more level playing field and targeting businesses that substitute dairy ingredients with cheaper alternatives.

For consumers, effective implementation will depend on regular laboratory testing, supply-chain traceability, licensing checks and strict enforcement from manufacturing facilities to retail markets.

The Uttar Pradesh action highlights a broader shift in India’s food-safety enforcement, with authorities increasingly focusing not only on adulteration but also on the identity, composition and authenticity of products sold as dairy.
