NABL Launches Accreditation Scheme for Mobile Food Testing Laboratories in India

The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) has launched India’s first accreditation scheme for mobile food testing laboratories, aiming to expand access to reliable and quality-assured food testing services beyond conventional laboratory facilities.

The scheme was launched on 10 August 2026 and is designed to bring accredited food testing closer to consumers, communities and areas where access to conventional laboratories may be limited.

Mobile food testing laboratories are laboratories established in vehicles or transportable units that can collect and test food samples at or near the point of collection. This model can be particularly useful for food safety surveillance in local markets, remote locations and other areas requiring on-site or rapid testing.

Under the new framework, NABL will assess key aspects of mobile laboratories, including their testing methods, equipment and personnel, with the objective of recognising their technical competence and ensuring reliable testing results.

The accreditation scheme does not provide funding for establishing mobile laboratories. Instead, it provides a formal accreditation framework for laboratories that meet the required technical and quality standards.

The initiative operates under NABL’s Integrated Assessment Programme, which brings multiple assessment requirements together into a single assessment process.

The introduction of the scheme is expected to strengthen food safety surveillance and support faster regulatory action when contaminants or other food safety concerns are identified.

NABL is a constituent of the Quality Council of India (QCI). The scheme was unveiled during the Gunvatta Samanvaya multilateral MoU exchange ceremony in New Delhi.

The move marks a significant step towards making quality-assured food testing more accessible and responsive across India, particularly in locations where conventional laboratory infrastructure may not be readily available.
