The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated action against Mapro Foods Pvt. Ltd. following a viral video that reportedly showed worms in a customer’s pizza at the popular Mapro Garden outlet in Lonavala, Maharashtra.
Viral Video Triggers Food Safety Inspection
The incident came to attention after a video circulated on social media, allegedly showing worms in a pizza served to a customer at the Mapro Garden outlet.
Following the incident, food safety officials conducted a surprise inspection of the premises to assess compliance with mandatory food safety and hygiene requirements.
FSSAI Finds Hygiene and Safety Violations:
During the inspection, officials identified non-compliance with prescribed hygiene and sanitation requirements under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
FSSAI has subsequently initiated regulatory proceedings against the food business operator.
The specific deficiencies identified during the inspection have not been publicly detailed in full.
No Recall or Closure Announced:
The regulatory action currently involves proceedings for potential penalty. No product recall, seizure or closure has been announced, and no penalty has been imposed at this stage.
The action highlights the importance of maintaining strict hygiene and sanitation standards at food service establishments, particularly where food is prepared and served directly to consumers.
Why Schedule 4 Compliance Matters:
Schedule 4 establishes Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) that food businesses are required to follow.
These standards cover areas including:
- Premises hygiene and sanitation
- Food handling practices
- Personal hygiene of food handlers
- Equipment cleanliness and maintenance
- Prevention of contamination
- Safe food preparation and storage
The Mapro Foods case underscores how viral food-safety incidents can trigger regulatory scrutiny and inspections.
Food safety is not only about the final product — it depends on maintaining hygiene and safe practices throughout the entire food preparation and handling process.
