A major milk adulteration case in Maharashtra has triggered serious food safety concerns after investigators revealed that more than 2.3 crore litres of suspected adulterated milk may have entered the state’s supply chain over the past six months.
The findings emerged during a joint investigation by the Maharashtra Police and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) into an alleged milk adulteration racket operating in Bhoom taluka of Dharashiv district.
Investigation Reveals Large-Scale Adulteration
According to investigators, an examination of the accused’s sales records indicated that approximately 2,30,470 kilograms of low-quality milk powder were allegedly used to manufacture around 23,04,070 litres of synthetic milk, with an estimated value of ₹9.21 crore.
Officials further suspect that the synthetic milk was blended with genuine milk at a ratio of 10 litres of adulterated milk for every 100 litres of pure milk. Based on this proportion, authorities believe that over 2.3 crore litres of adulterated milk may have been distributed across various parts of Maharashtra through milk collection centres in the Bhoom region.
Chemicals Allegedly Used in the Milk
Investigators allege that the synthetic milk was prepared using low-quality milk powder along with substances such as:
- Detergent powder
- Palm oil
- Low-grade chemical additives
Authorities believe these ingredients were used to imitate the appearance, texture, and fat content of genuine milk.
Health Concerns Raised
Medical experts have warned that prolonged consumption of chemically adulterated milk may pose significant health risks. Potential health effects include damage to the liver, kidneys, and digestive system, with children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals considered particularly vulnerable.

Police Action Continues
Police have registered a case against seven individuals under relevant legal provisions. At the time of reporting, the accused were reported to be absconding.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to trace the suspects, while enforcement agencies continue conducting raids at multiple locations linked to the alleged racket.
During the investigation, officials reportedly seized 61 bags of adulterated milk powder. Preliminary findings suggest that the material was supplied to several dairy units in the Bhoom region, while investigators are also examining the possible involvement of multiple milk collection centres.
Authorities stated that the adulterated milk powder was allegedly sold under the guise of cattle feed to avoid suspicion.
Legal Consequences
Under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, individuals found guilty of manufacturing or distributing food that poses a serious threat to public health may face severe penalties, including substantial financial fines and imprisonment, depending on the nature and gravity of the offence.
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify all individuals and businesses involved in the alleged adulteration network and trace the distribution of the suspected synthetic milk across Maharashtra.
