The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has strengthened its food import monitoring network by adding a new point of entry at the Kannur International Airport in Kerala. With this latest inclusion, the total number of authorised food import entry points in India has now risen to 166, reflecting the regulator’s continued efforts to ensure safe and efficient food imports.
According to the official notification issued by FSSAI, an Authorised Officer has been appointed for the Air Cargo Complex, Kannur International Airport (Port Code: INCNN4). The officer will be responsible for overseeing all food import operations at the port and ensuring compliance with India’s food safety standards.
Ports of entry are designated locations where food imports are permitted into the country under FSSAI’s supervision. Each port is equipped with authorised officers and Customs officials who regulate, inspect, and verify the safety of imported food products before they reach Indian consumers.
In March 2024, the food regulator had notified 155 ports of entry across the nation for food imports. Since then, FSSAI has been actively reviewing and expanding the list based on the trend and volume of food imports, availability of testing facilities, and logistics infrastructure in various regions. This review process ensures that India’s growing food import sector operates under a strong and reliable regulatory framework.
The addition of Kannur International Airport marks another step forward in this direction. It is expected to facilitate smoother import procedures for Kerala and nearby regions, reducing transit time and improving accessibility for importers.
Over the past year, FSSAI has added 11 new entry points to the list, highlighting its proactive approach to improving India’s import oversight system. With enhanced infrastructure and increased monitoring capacity, the food authority aims to safeguard public health while promoting ease of doing business for the food industry.
FSSAI continues to emphasise that its objective is not just to regulate but also to create a robust, transparent, and science-based import ecosystem. By expanding its presence across key logistical hubs like Kannur, the authority reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that only safe, high-quality food reaches Indian consumers.
