PepsiCo India has inaugurated its first food manufacturing facility in Assam, investing ₹778 crore in a new plant in Nalbari district. The facility is expected to strengthen the company’s manufacturing and supply-chain network across Northeast India and create opportunities for farmers, local businesses and communities.

PepsiCo India has expanded its food manufacturing footprint with the opening of a new facility in Nalbari, Assam, marking the company’s first food plant in the state.

The ₹778 crore facility was inaugurated on September 10 by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Spread across approximately 44.2 acres, the plant has generated around 700 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

According to PepsiCo India, the investment forms part of its broader ₹5,700 crore investment commitment in India through 2030, aimed at expanding manufacturing capabilities, strengthening supply-chain resilience and supporting sustainable growth.

Facility to manufacture Lay’s and Uncle Chipps

The Nalbari plant will manufacture popular PepsiCo brands including Lay’s and Uncle Chipps. The facility will also support the company’s growing foods manufacturing network across the Northeast and West Bengal markets.

PepsiCo India & South Asia CEO Jagrut Kotecha said the investment will strengthen the company’s manufacturing presence while creating opportunities across the wider value chain, including farmers, local enterprises, women, young professionals and communities.

He also highlighted Assam’s agricultural base, developing infrastructure and increasing economic significance as key factors behind the company’s decision to establish the facility in the state.

Focus on farmers and Assam’s agricultural ecosystem

Beyond manufacturing, the facility is expected to contribute to the development of Assam’s agricultural ecosystem.

PepsiCo India plans to source chip-grade potatoes from the region, with the company stating that the initiative could benefit more than 5,000 farmers through sustainable farming practices.

The plant is also expected to create demand for approximately 60,000 tonnes of cold-storage capacity, supporting related logistics and agricultural infrastructure.

PepsiCo currently works with more than 600 farmers in Assam and is expanding its farming network through support in areas such as seeds, agronomy, technology, training and market access.

Stronger opportunities for local businesses and women

The company said the new facility will generate opportunities for MSMEs, logistics providers, warehousing, packaging companies and other ancillary businesses connected to the food manufacturing ecosystem.

PepsiCo India is also targeting a workforce comprising more than 75 per cent women, reinforcing its focus on building a more inclusive workforce at the facility.

Boost to PepsiCo’s Northeast expansion

The Nalbari investment represents an important step in PepsiCo India’s efforts to expand its manufacturing and distribution capabilities in eastern and northeastern India.

With local sourcing, new employment opportunities and investment in supporting infrastructure, the facility is positioned to contribute not only to PepsiCo’s growth but also to the broader food-processing and agricultural ecosystem in Assam.
