Meghalaya Lifts Interim Ban on Sting Energy Drink After Inquiry Finds No Link to Student Death

Meghalaya

The Meghalaya Commissionerate of Food Safety has withdrawn its interim state-wide restriction on the sale, stocking and distribution of Sting energy drink after an inquiry found no causal link between consumption of the beverage and the reported death of a student.

The restriction was imposed on August 14 following reports alleging that the student’s death was associated with consumption of the caffeinated energy drink.

According to Commissioner of Food Safety Dr. Joram Beda, the decision to lift the restriction was based on an inquiry report submitted by the Food Safety Officer from Tura on August 14. The report found that the investigation did not establish any causal relationship between consumption of Sting and the reported death.

A statutory order issued on August 15 formally withdrew the interim prohibition with immediate effect, allowing the sale, stocking and distribution of the product to resume across Meghalaya.

Withdrawal Does Not Mean Product Endorsement

The Commissionerate clarified that the withdrawal of the restriction relates specifically to the reported incident. It should not be interpreted as an adverse finding, special certification or endorsement of Sting or its manufacturer.

Food business operators across the state have also been reminded that they must continue to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and all applicable food safety regulations.

Routine Monitoring to Continue

The Meghalaya food safety authorities said that routine surveillance, sampling and enforcement activities will continue for food and beverage products across the state.

The lifting of the interim restriction therefore allows Sting to return to normal sale and distribution in Meghalaya, while regulatory authorities continue their regular food safety monitoring and enforcement activities.
