FSSAI Takes Action Against Priyagold Maker Over Cattle Feed Bran in Biscuits and Five Other Food Businesses

FSSAI

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated regulatory action against six food business operators over food safety violations, adulteration and hygiene-related non-compliances. The action includes prosecution proceedings against Surya Food and Agro Ltd, the manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits, Dodla Dairy Ltd and Ueir Organic Foods Pvt Ltd, while notices have been issued to three other businesses.

According to FSSAI’s statement reported by Business Standard on October 17, 2026, the violations involved the use of material unfit for human consumption, unsafe food samples, substandard milk and deficiencies in food storage, sanitation and documentation.

Cattle Feed Bran Found in Priyagold Biscuits

FSSAI initiated prosecution proceedings against Surya Food and Agro Ltd after discovering that bran intended for cattle feed had been used as a raw material in Priyagold biscuits as a source of fibre.

The regulator stated that the material was unfit for human consumption. Inspections also identified deficiencies in several areas of the manufacturing facility, including plant hygiene, pest control, raw material storage and segregation, personnel hygiene, premises maintenance and the handling of intermediate formulations.

These findings raised concerns about raw material suitability and the overall implementation of food safety and hygiene practices at the facility.

Unsafe Yellow Raisins From Ueir Organic Foods

FSSAI initiated prosecution proceedings against Ueir Organic Foods Pvt Ltd after a regulatory sample of yellow raisins was declared unsafe following laboratory analysis.

The sample contained pesticide residues, including thiamethoxam and fluopyram metabolites, exceeding the prescribed maximum residue limits.

The findings highlight the importance of pesticide residue monitoring, supplier verification and effective quality control throughout the food supply chain.

Dodla Dairy Milk Sample Found Unsafe

Dodla Dairy Ltd also faces prosecution proceedings following regulatory testing of a full cream milk sample.

The sample was initially declared substandard because it did not comply with the prescribed milk fat specifications under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations.

Following an appeal by the company, the sample was referred to a Referral Food Laboratory. The subsequent analysis confirmed that the milk was unsafe due to the presence of detergent or caustic soda. It was also found to be substandard because its milk fat content was below the minimum prescribed limit.

The findings raise serious concerns about milk quality, product integrity and compliance with food safety requirements.

FSSAI Issues Notices to Three Other Businesses

Narpadham Foods

During an inspection of Narpadham Foods, FSSAI identified multiple licensing, sanitation and storage-related deficiencies.

The violations included:

  • Failure to prominently display the updated FSSAI licence.
  • Inadequate working space and accumulation of dirt and dust.
  • Insufficient storage facilities and improper segregation of raw materials.
  • Deficiencies in sanitation schedules, pest control programmes and equipment maintenance.

FSSAI directed the business to review and correct potentially misleading health and nutrition claims on product labels and promotional materials. It was also instructed to remove the Retailer category from its FSSAI licence and submit a written explanation, an action-taken report and a compliance report.

Sha Kantilal Jayantilal

FSSAI issued a notice to Sha Kantilal Jayantilal concerning closed premises and the verification of declared business activities.

The business has been asked to provide documentary evidence supporting its declared operations and ensure that the business categories listed on its FSSAI licence accurately reflect its actual activities.

Failure to provide the required clarification and supporting documents within the stipulated period may lead to further regulatory action.

Sun Ridges Health Carers

Sun Ridges Health Carers received a notice over several food safety, storage and hygiene deficiencies.

During the inspection, food was reportedly stored directly on the floor without pallets, while doors were not properly fitted to prevent pest entry.

The regulator also identified missing or unavailable records relating to:

  • Food testing and potable water testing.
  • Approved suppliers and raw material inspections.
  • Medical examinations and required inoculation of food handlers.
  • Customer complaint redressal.
  • Waste removal and preventive maintenance.
  • Internal audits and food safety documentation.

These deficiencies indicate gaps in the implementation and documentation of essential food safety management practices.

Importance of Food Safety Compliance

The latest enforcement action highlights the importance of maintaining robust food safety systems across food manufacturing, dairy processing, storage and distribution operations.

Food businesses must ensure that all raw materials are suitable for human consumption, products meet applicable safety and quality standards, and manufacturing and storage facilities maintain proper hygiene and pest control.

Maintaining accurate records, verifying suppliers, monitoring laboratory results and ensuring that FSSAI licences reflect actual business activities are also essential components of regulatory compliance.

Conclusion

FSSAI’s action against six food businesses reinforces the regulator’s focus on unsafe food, adulteration, misleading claims and inadequate hygiene practices. The cases involving Priyagold biscuits, Dodla Dairy and Ueir Organic Foods underline the importance of raw material control, laboratory testing and strict adherence to food safety regulations.

Food business operators should regularly review their food safety management systems, strengthen internal audits and take timely corrective action to prevent violations and protect consumer health.
