In a significant milestone for India’s dairy sector, Hon’ble Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, performed the Bhoomi Pujan of the World’s Largest Yogurt (Dahi) and Curd Production Plant under the ₹700 crore Amul Bengal Dairy Project. The ceremony was conducted remotely from the New Town Convention Centre, Kolkata, marking another major step toward strengthening India’s cooperative dairy movement.

The mega dairy facility, being developed as part of the Amul Bengal Dairy Project, is expected to play a crucial role in expanding dairy processing capacity, supporting rural livelihoods, and accelerating the vision of White Revolution 2.0. The project has been initiated under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, with the objective of promoting the government’s vision of “Prosperity through Cooperation.”

A Landmark Project for India’s Dairy Industry

The upcoming facility is designed to become the largest yogurt and cultured dairy products manufacturing plant in the world, significantly enhancing India’s dairy processing capabilities. Once operational, the plant will process a wide range of dairy products, including milk, yogurt, paneer, ghee, ice cream, sweets, and flavoured milk.

The project is expected to create new opportunities for dairy farmers across West Bengal and neighboring regions by providing a stable market for milk procurement while strengthening the cooperative dairy ecosystem.

Production Capacity of the Mega Dairy Plant

The new Amul Bengal Dairy facility will feature state-of-the-art processing infrastructure with impressive production capacities, including:

  • 10 lakh litres per day milk packing capacity
  • 2 lakh litres per day UHT milk processing
  • 1 lakh litres per day ice cream production
  • 20 metric tonnes per day paneer production
  • 10 metric tonnes per day ghee production
  • 10 metric tonnes per day dairy sweets manufacturing
  • 2.5 lakh packs per day flavoured milk production
  • 1,000 metric tonnes per day yogurt (dahi) and cultured dairy products production

These capacities position the facility among the largest integrated dairy processing plants globally.

Boost to Dairy Farmers and Rural Economy

The Amul Bengal Dairy Project is expected to benefit lakhs of dairy farmers by increasing milk procurement, improving market access, and generating employment across the dairy value chain. By expanding processing infrastructure, the project aims to reduce wastage, improve value addition, and enhance farmer incomes through the cooperative model.

The initiative also aligns with India’s broader efforts to strengthen food processing infrastructure, promote self-reliance in the dairy sector, and increase the availability of high-quality dairy products for consumers.

Strengthening White Revolution 2.0

The project forms an important part of India’s ongoing White Revolution 2.0, which focuses on modernizing dairy infrastructure, adopting advanced processing technologies, and expanding cooperative participation across the country. With increasing demand for value-added dairy products, the new facility is expected to improve production efficiency while supporting sustainable growth in the dairy industry.
