Officials have seized around 170 kg of suspected adulterated ghee during a surprise inspection at a dairy in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, amid concerns over food adulteration.
The inspection was conducted on October 6, 2026, by officials from the Vigilance and Enforcement Department along with personnel from the Food Safety and Legal Metrology departments at Shiva Gayatri Milk Dairy and Ghee Preparation Centre in Nagendranagar.
Adulterated Ghee Production Uncovered
According to officials, the dairy was allegedly using a combination of butter, palm oil, vanaspati and harmful chemicals to prepare ghee.
The seized materials reportedly included:
- 95 kg of butter
- 75 kg of palm oil
- 4 kg of vanaspati
- Other suspected harmful chemicals
Officials estimated the value of the raw materials seized at around ₹20 lakh.
Ghee Supplied to Multiple Establishments
The preliminary investigation indicated that the dairy was producing and selling approximately 3,000 kg of ghee every month, with an estimated monthly value of ₹12.80 lakh.
The suspected adulterated ghee was reportedly supplied to hotels, hostels, biryani outlets and wholesale shops.
Samples Sent for Laboratory Testing
Food Safety officials collected samples of the ghee and related materials and sent them to a forensic laboratory in Chennai for detailed analysis.
The laboratory findings will help determine the exact nature and extent of adulteration.
Legal Action Initiated
A case has been registered against the dairy under Section 6-A of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, along with other applicable laws.
Legal Metrology officials have also registered five cases against the establishment.
Officials from the Ongole Vigilance and Enforcement unit said strict action would be taken against establishments found involved in food adulteration and that enforcement measures would continue to protect consumers from unsafe food products.
