India’s tea production witnessed a 5.9% decline in September 2025, according to data released by the Tea Board. The total output for the month stood at 159.92 million kilogrammes, compared to 169.93 million kilogrammes in the same period last year.
Despite the overall drop, Assam’s tea production remained steady, with output at 94.76 million kilogrammes, slightly up from 94.03 million kilogrammes in September 2024. However, other major tea-producing regions reported declines.
West Bengal experienced a notable fall, producing 40.03 million kilogrammes in September 2025 — down from 48.35 million kilogrammes a year earlier. The decline in West Bengal significantly contributed to the overall dip in North India’s tea output.
Overall, North India’s tea production, which includes Assam and West Bengal, slipped to 138.65 million kilogrammes from 146.96 million kilogrammes during the same month in 2024.
In South India, tea output also registered a marginal decline, falling to 21.27 million kilogrammes in September 2025 compared to 22.97 million kilogrammes in the previous year.
The decline in production comes at a time when the Indian tea industry continues to face multiple challenges, including rising input costs, climate-related disruptions, and fluctuating global demand.
