In a major operation to ensure food safety standards, the Food Safety Department of Uttarakhand conducted a significant raid on an illegal soda manufacturing unit in Haridwar. The unit, located in a densely populated area, was operating without a valid FSSAI license and was found to be producing carbonated beverages under unhygienic and potentially hazardous conditions.
Acting on a tip-off, food safety officers carried out the surprise inspection and discovered that the unit had no regulatory approvals, no quality control processes, and was using questionable ingredients. Several bottles of soda were seized on the spot, and samples have been sent to a government-certified laboratory for detailed analysis.
Officials reported that the soda was being filled and packed in reused plastic bottles without proper cleaning or sterilization. The surroundings were unsanitary, with open drainage, no pest control, and no proper labeling on the bottles—clear violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
This raid is part of an ongoing statewide effort by the FSSAI and local food safety authorities to crack down on food businesses operating without licenses or flouting hygiene regulations. The department has reiterated that such operations pose a serious risk to public health, especially during the summer months when the demand for cold beverages is high.
“We are committed to protecting consumers from unsafe food practices,” said a senior official from the Food Safety Department. “Our teams are actively monitoring such illegal operations and strict action will be taken against violators. Public health cannot be compromised.”
The owner of the illegal unit is expected to face legal proceedings, including heavy fines and possible imprisonment under relevant food safety laws. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food or beverage manufacturing activity in their locality.
The crackdown underscores the importance of food safety compliance and the need for stricter enforcement to prevent such practices from endangering lives. With FSSAI stepping up its surveillance across the country, more such unlicensed units are expected to come under the scanner in the coming weeks.
