The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of four Domino’s Pizza outlets, including three in Mumbai, following inspections that found multiple food safety and hygiene violations.
The action was taken as part of a special crackdown on chain restaurants across Maharashtra. According to the FDA, the affected Domino’s outlets are located at Vile Parle West, Borivali West and R-City Mall in Ghatkopar West, with the fourth outlet located in Malkapur.
The outlets are operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd.
Violations Found at Mumbai Outlets
At the Vile Parle West outlet, inspectors identified deficiencies involving the display of the FSSAI licence, potable water, food storage, pest control and hygiene facilities.
The FDA directed the outlet to strengthen temperature monitoring for frozen food, properly segregate food and non-food items, implement effective rodent and pest-control measures, and maintain adequate hand-washing and hygiene facilities.
The Borivali West outlet was found to have around 15% non-compliance. The FDA directed the establishment to address issues related to food storage, temperature monitoring, food testing, cleanliness and pest control.
Officials also required proper segregation of raw and cooked food as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, along with regular sanitisation of equipment and utensils.
At the R-City Mall outlet in Ghatkopar West, inspectors found deficiencies in cleanliness, sanitation scheduling and pest control. The outlet also failed to properly implement FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) practices and maintain appropriate temperature controls for food storage.
The FDA also flagged missing food-grade certificates and records related to calibration, preventive maintenance, food and water testing and food safety.
Malkapur Outlet Also Suspended
The Domino’s outlet operated by Jubilant FoodWorks in Malkapur was also found to have serious compliance deficiencies, with the FDA reporting approximately 40% non-compliance.
The violations included shortcomings in basic facilities, equipment, cleanliness and pest control.
In Satara district, the FDA also took action against two fast-food establishments operated by Sapphire Foods India, directing corrective measures related to pizza preparation.
These included using separate ovens and pans for vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas, proper segregation of food, and appropriate labelling of sauces and pizza toppings with packing and expiry dates.
104 Chain Restaurants Inspected
The special drive covered 104 chain restaurant establishments across Maharashtra and included major brands such as Domino’s Pizza, KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks and Monginis.
According to the FDA, two establishments were ordered to stop business, 95 received improvement notices and licences of five establishments were suspended during the chain-restaurant drive.
Separately, the FDA also suspended licences of several other food establishments in Nashik and Mumbai after inspections identified deficiencies involving cleanliness, food storage, water, equipment, ventilation, basic facilities and pest control.
Overall, the Maharashtra FDA said it inspected 120 establishments in recent days, issued 54 improvement notices and suspended 11 food business licences.
FDA Intensifies Food Safety Crackdown
The latest action comes amid an intensified enforcement drive by the Maharashtra FDA against food safety and hygiene violations at restaurants, hotels, clubs and other food establishments.
The department has been carrying out inspections across the state under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, who took charge in May.
The FDA’s latest inspections highlight the importance of maintaining proper food storage temperatures, preventing pest infestation, ensuring hygiene, segregating food products and maintaining mandatory food safety records across food-service establishments.
