New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the food business licence of Rehaan Healthcare after uncovering serious food safety and hygiene violations during an inspection of the company’s health supplements and nutraceutical manufacturing facility.
The suspension comes after FSSAI inspectors identified multiple instances of non-compliance with food safety regulations, prompting the regulator to direct the company to immediately cease all food business operations until every deficiency is rectified and verified by the Competent Authority.
According to FSSAI, the manufacturing unit received an overall compliance score of just 12%, indicating extremely poor adherence to food safety standards and regulatory requirements. The authority stated that such a low score reflects “very serious failure and non-compliance” with existing food safety provisions.
Major Violations Found During Inspection
The inspection revealed widespread hygiene and infrastructure deficiencies across the facility, including:
- Extremely unhygienic and disorganized manufacturing premises.
- Accumulation of filth and sludge beneath manufacturing tanks.
- Poor housekeeping practices increasing the risk of cross-contamination.
- Improper storage of raw materials.
- Inadequate storage facilities and insufficient workspace.
- Poor ventilation and inadequate lighting.
- Damaged infrastructure and evidence of pest infestation.
- Absence of a valid drinking water quality test report.
- Spider webs, mould growth, flies, insects, and exposed food waste inside the production area.
FSSAI noted that these conditions pose a significant threat to food safety and product quality.
Public Health Concerns
The regulator emphasized that Rehaan Healthcare manufactures health supplements and nutraceuticals, including digestive syrups, multivitamin syrups, and other syrup-based products. Since these products are widely consumed by children and other vulnerable populations, maintaining stringent hygiene and safety standards is essential.
FSSAI warned that the poor sanitary conditions and failure to implement effective food safety controls present a serious and imminent risk to public health.
Production Halt Ordered
As part of the suspension order, Rehaan Healthcare has been instructed to stop all manufacturing and food business activities with immediate effect. Production can resume only after:
- All identified deficiencies are fully corrected.
- Compliance with food safety regulations is verified by the Competent Authority.
- FSSAI is satisfied that the facility meets the required standards.
The regulator also cautioned that legal action will be initiated if the company violates the suspension order or continues operations without approval.
FSSAI Intensifies Enforcement
The action against Rehaan Healthcare is part of FSSAI’s ongoing nationwide efforts to strengthen food safety compliance. Over the past few months, the regulator has taken action against several food and beverage companies for misleading claims, labelling violations, and non-compliance with food safety regulations. Notices have also been issued to multiple e-commerce platforms as part of broader enforcement initiatives.
FSSAI stated that these actions are based on consumer complaints, suo motu investigations, and routine inspections carried out by food safety officials to safeguard public health.
