The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) has announced a revised format for its accreditation certificate numbers, aiming to improve traceability, transparency, and ease of identification across accredited laboratories in India.
The updated numbering system will provide key information directly within the certificate number itself, allowing stakeholders to quickly identify important accreditation details without referring to additional records.
What’s Changing?
Under the new format, each accreditation certificate number will include:
- Field of Accreditation – Identifying whether the accreditation is for Testing (T), Calibration (C), Medical (M), Proficiency Testing Provider (P), Reference Material Producer (R), or Biobank (B).
- Month and Year of Accreditation – Reflecting the month and year in which the accreditation was granted or renewed.
- State/UT Code – A two-letter code representing the laboratory’s location, such as “MP” for Madhya Pradesh.
- Unique Certificate Number – A distinct identifier assigned to the accredited laboratory.
For international Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs), the State/UT code will be replaced with “GL” (Global).
Objective Behind the Revision
According to NABL, the revised format is intended to enhance the informativeness of accreditation certificate numbers, making them easier to interpret and manage. The change is expected to support better record-keeping, regulatory oversight, and stakeholder confidence in accredited facilities.
Transition Period for Laboratories
To ensure a smooth implementation, NABL has provided a six-month transition period. During this time, laboratories may continue using their existing certificate numbers while updating software systems, documentation, and printed materials.
This phased approach is designed to minimize operational disruptions and allow accredited laboratories sufficient time to adapt to the new numbering structure.

The new format will help laboratories, regulators, customers, and industry stakeholders quickly identify essential accreditation information from the certificate number itself. The move aligns with NABL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen accreditation processes and improve transparency within India’s quality infrastructure ecosystem.
Laboratories are advised to review the official NABL notification and familiarize themselves with the revised numbering structure to ensure a seamless transition before the implementation period concludes.
