A state-of-the-art honey testing laboratory has been inaugurated at the food technology department of Rajiv Gandhi University under a major initiative aimed at strengthening scientific beekeeping and honey quality infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh.
The project is funded by the National Bee Board and implemented by NECTAR in collaboration with RGU.
The launch event at Rono Hills was attended by several dignitaries including Doimukh MLA Nabam Vivek, RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof SK Nayak, Tezpur University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Amarendra Kumar Das, and NECTAR Director General Dr Arun Kumar Sarma.
Officials highlighted that the laboratory will support scientific testing, processing, storage, and value-addition of honey, helping improve quality standards and market competitiveness for local honey producers.
Speaking at the event, MLA Vivek stressed the importance of scientific apiculture and technology-driven livelihood opportunities for rural communities. He said the initiative would help strengthen market linkages, entrepreneurship, and income generation for farmers and youth in Arunachal Pradesh.
Academic leaders from RGU and Tezpur University emphasised the role of research institutions in promoting sustainable agricultural innovation and skill development. They noted that the facility would also create opportunities for student research, training, and inter-institutional collaboration in the field of apiculture.
NECTAR Director General Dr Arun Kumar Sarma described the initiative as a replicable rural development model for Northeast India. He highlighted the importance of integrating honey testing, processing, storage, and digital monitoring systems to ensure efficiency, transparency, and better value-chain management.
The honey testing laboratory and upcoming honey processing unit are expected to significantly boost the apiculture ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh by improving honey quality, increasing farmer income, generating rural employment, and promoting women-led entrepreneurship.
