In a decisive move to curb food adulteration, authorities in Kolkata have taken strong action against the sale of unsafe and contaminated food products. During a recent inspection drive, officials used the Mobile Food Safety on Wheels (MFSW) unit to test stocks of loose spices being sold by local hawkers.
The inspection revealed alarming results — around 180 kg of adulterated loose turmeric and chilli powder were detected on the spot. These products were found to contain impurities and non-permitted coloring agents, making them unsafe for human consumption. The adulterated stock was immediately destroyed under official supervision to prevent further sale in the market.
In addition to the on-the-spot destruction, officials collected seven official samples of different spices for detailed laboratory testing. These samples will help trace the source of adulteration and determine the exact nature of contaminants used.
The Food Safety Department emphasized that the drive is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that consumers get pure and safe food products. They also warned vendors against selling loose or unverified food items without maintaining proper hygiene or quality checks.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to building a clean and safe food ecosystem in Kolkata and across the state. Such proactive actions are aimed at protecting consumers from health risks caused by adulterated and low-quality food.
