The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), through its Western Regional Office, has initiated enforcement action against a manufacturer of “alkaline water” following multiple violations related to food safety standards and labelling requirements.
The action was triggered by a consumer complaint filed on the Food Safety Connect portal. The complaint indicated that the Food Business Operator (FBO) had failed to address consumer grievances adequately. In response, authorities conducted a post-license inspection at the company’s manufacturing facility located in Savli, Vadodara, Gujarat.
Inspection Findings
During the inspection, officials identified several non-compliances. The product lacked proper front-of-pack labelling, including the absence of the product name and ingredient declaration. Additionally, visible black particles were observed in the finished product.
Further technical assessment revealed additional concerns, including unexplained blackish-brown coloration, the presence of sediments, and inconsistencies between information provided on primary and secondary packaging. These discrepancies raised serious questions regarding product quality and transparency.
Regulatory Action
Based on the severity of the violations, regulatory authorities seized stock valued at approximately INR 1.61 lakh. Formal proceedings have been initiated under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Laboratory Analysis
Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed the presence of fulvic acid, a substance not permitted under existing FSSAI regulations for such products. Investigations established that this compound originated from the addition of black mineral substances and was not naturally present in the water. This finding constitutes a clear violation of established safety standards.
Conclusion
FSSAI has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all food and beverage products available in the market are safe, compliant, and accurately labelled. The case highlights the importance of regulatory compliance, transparent labelling, and adherence to prescribed standards by food business operators.
This enforcement action underscores the authority’s continued focus on safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining the integrity of the food supply chain in India.
