The Government of Chhattisgarh has issued a prohibition order banning the manufacture, processing, storage, transportation, distribution, and sale of non-standardized dairy analogue products that imitate genuine dairy products. The decision aims to protect consumers from misleading food products and promote fair trade practices across the state.
The order has been issued under the powers conferred by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, following a comprehensive review of enforcement experience, laboratory analysis, consumer interests, risk assessment, and fair trade considerations. Authorities concluded that certain non-standardized dairy analogue products have the potential to deceive consumers by appearing similar to genuine dairy products.
What Products Are Covered?
The prohibition applies to non-standardized dairy analogue products that resemble dairy items such as:
- Analogue Paneer
- Cream substitutes
- Butter substitutes
- Other non-dairy products that create the impression of being genuine dairy products
The ban specifically covers products that:
- Are not genuine dairy products.
- Use vegetable fat, vegetable oil, or other non-dairy ingredients instead of milk.
- Have labeling, packaging, presentation, or marketing that may mislead consumers into believing they are authentic dairy products.
Products Exempted
The order clarifies that standardized products regulated under existing food standards are not affected by the prohibition. These include:
- Frozen desserts
- Processed cheese
- Mixed-fat spreads
Duration of the Ban
The prohibition comes into effect immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette. It will remain in force for one year, or until the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notifies final regulatory standards for dairy analogue products, or until the order is amended, revoked, or replaced by the Commissioner of Food Safety, whichever occurs first.
Compliance Required
The Government has directed all concerned authorities and Food Business Operators (FBOs) in Chhattisgarh to comply with the detailed prohibition order issued by the Food and Drugs Administration.
