The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to multiple Food Business Operators (FBOs) for alleged violations related to misleading product claims, non-compliant branding practices, labelling irregularities, and consumer complaints under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The regulatory action comes as part of FSSAI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen consumer protection and ensure transparency in food marketing and labelling across the country.

Key Violations Identified

Some examples highlighted by the regulator include:
- Products making therapeutic or disease reduction claims without prior approval.
- Food items using terms such as “natural,” “healthy,” or “heart-friendly” in ways that may create false impressions.
- Labels failing to clearly disclose product categories, ingredient percentages, or added sugars.
- Nutraceutical products making unverified claims related to digestion, muscle gain, energy enhancement, and recovery.
- Front-of-pack claims that do not align with the actual composition of the product.
FSSAI Directs Corrective Measures
The notified food businesses have been instructed to:
- Submit details related to the complaints received.
- Provide corrective and preventive action plans.
- Furnish Action Taken Reports (ATRs).
- Review and strengthen inventory and quality management systems.
- Ensure compliance with hygiene and sanitation requirements.
- Revise product labels, claims, and branding practices in line with existing regulations.
FSSAI has emphasized that all food businesses must strictly adhere to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with applicable labelling and advertising regulations.
Importance of Accurate Food Labelling
Clear and truthful food labelling plays a critical role in helping consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Misleading claims can create unrealistic expectations regarding a product’s health benefits, nutritional value, or ingredient composition.
Regulatory authorities continue to increase scrutiny of food advertisements and product packaging to ensure that consumers receive accurate information.
Food businesses are advised to regularly review their marketing materials, packaging designs, and product claims to ensure full compliance with evolving regulations.
As consumer awareness grows, transparency and scientific substantiation of claims are becoming increasingly important for maintaining trust and regulatory compliance.
Disclaimer: The issuance of a notice by FSSAI does not necessarily indicate a final determination of wrongdoing. The concerned businesses have been given an opportunity to respond and implement corrective measures in accordance with regulatory procedures.
