The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to several Alcoholic Beverage manufacturers for alleged violations of food safety regulations concerning the use of added flavours and misleading age-related claims on product labels.
According to FSSAI, inspections found instances where certain manufacturers used added flavours that imitate the natural characteristics of alcoholic beverages, a practice prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018.
The authority also flagged misleading age-related claims and improper use of terms such as “aged,” stating that such claims must strictly comply with regulatory requirements. In some cases, the declared age did not accurately represent the youngest spirit used in the blend, leading to non-compliance.
The concerned Food Business Operators (FBOs) have been directed to immediately ensure compliance with the regulations and submit an explanation as to why action should not be initiated against them under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI said the action is aimed at strengthening consumer protection, improving transparency in labelling, and ensuring that alcoholic beverage manufacturers adhere to established food safety standards.
