In a major food safety enforcement action, the Food Safety Flying Squad of FDCA Gujarat conducted an inspection drive at Madhupura Market in Ahmedabad, targeting the sale and storage of loose spices suspected to be adulterated.
According to officials, around 30 shops and firms were inspected during the drive. The team seized approximately 200 kg of loose spices, estimated to be worth about ₹1 lakh, citing suspicion of adulteration and violation of food safety regulations.
Why the Action Was Taken:
Authorities stated that the seized spices were being sold in loose, unpackaged form — a practice that raises concerns over hygiene, traceability, and quality control. Under provisions linked to India’s food safety framework, including norms enforced by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the sale of loose spices without proper labeling and approval is restricted in many cases to protect consumers.
Officials emphasized that loose spices can:
- Be more vulnerable to contamination
- Lack clear manufacturing or expiry details
- Increase the risk of adulteration
- Make traceability difficult during food safety checks
