An expert meeting jointly convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) from 20–23 May 2025 has spotlighted the pressing issue of chemical contaminants in water used across agrifood systems. Held in Rome, the meeting brought together international experts to refine strategies addressing food safety risks linked to water quality.
Organized by FAO’s Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division along with WHO’s Departments of Nutrition, Food Safety, and Environment, Climate Change and Health, the primary goal was to finalize the technical document titled “Prioritizing Food Safety Issues Related to Chemical Water Quality in Agrifood Systems.”
The meeting emphasized the increasing need to assess and mitigate chemical risks in irrigation and processing water, especially amid growing global concerns over climate change, industrial pollution, and sustainable farming practices.
The key conclusions of the meeting have been summarized in a report released on 5 June, while a more detailed publication will follow later this year as part of the Food Safety and Quality Series.
