Maharashtra FDA Seizes Over 1328 Kg of Sweets and Mawa in Mumbai

FSSAI

In a major food safety enforcement operation, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized more than 1,328 kilograms of sweets and mawa from multiple establishments across Zone 01 in Greater Mumbai.

Officials estimated the value of the seized products at approximately ₹3.6 lakh.

The action was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety standards and prevent the distribution of unsafe food products to consumers.

Serious Food Safety Violations Detected

During inspections, FDA officials found several units operating in violation of food safety regulations.

Key violations identified during the operation included:

  • Highly unhygienic and unsanitary storage conditions that posed significant contamination risks.
  • Failure to maintain mandatory temperature controls for perishable milk-based products.
  • Absence of required regulatory declarations on product packaging.
  • Serious labelling violations and non-compliance with food safety norms.

Authorities noted that improper handling and storage of dairy products such as mawa can increase the risk of spoilage and foodborne illnesses.

Samples Sent for Laboratory Testing

As part of the enforcement process, official food samples have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis.

The testing aims to determine whether the seized products are substandard, misbranded, or unsafe for human consumption.

Further regulatory action will be initiated based on the laboratory findings.

Consumer Safety Remains the Priority

The latest operation highlights Maharashtra FDA’s continued focus on ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and protecting public health.

Consumers are advised to purchase sweets and dairy products only from licensed and reputable vendors, especially during festive seasons and periods of high demand.

Food businesses are also urged to maintain hygienic storage conditions, follow proper temperature controls, and comply with all labelling and licensing requirements under food safety regulations.
