FSSAI Sends Notices to Leading Food Brands Over Safety and Hygiene Concerns

KFC

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to several food business operators, including Nestlé India, KFC, Flipkart, and food brand Open Secret, following consumer complaints related to alleged product contamination and hygiene concerns.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the notices were issued after the regulator took cognisance of complaints that gained significant attention on social media platforms.

“It is true that notices have gone to several food businesses. The notices have been issued based on social media complaints raised by consumers on compliance issues by certain food businesses and brands that recently went viral online,” a senior FSSAI official said.

Companies and Allegations Under Review

The notices involve the following companies and products:

  • Nestlé India – Allegations of insects being found inside a packet of Maggi noodles.
  • KFC – Complaints regarding unhygienic conditions at a KFC outlet located in MVR Mall, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Open Secret – Allegations that its “Unjunked Dates” product contained insects.
  • Flipkart Minutes – Under scrutiny as the delivery platform associated with the Open Secret product complaint.

FSSAI clarified that the notices are part of the regulator’s standard procedure to investigate consumer complaints and verify compliance with food safety regulations.

Details Sought by FSSAI

In the case of Nestlé India, FSSAI has reportedly sought an Action Taken Report (ATR), including:

  • Details of the vendor involved
  • Internal quality-check records for the concerned batch
  • Corrective measures taken to remove affected products from the supply chain
  • Preventive actions to avoid similar incidents in the future

Regarding the KFC outlet, the regulator has requested information related to:

  • Hygiene and sanitation practices
  • Food handling and storage procedures
  • Waste management systems
  • Pest control measures
  • Employee hygiene protocols
  • Documentary evidence of corrective actions taken

For Open Secret and Flipkart Minutes, FSSAI has sought:

  • Internal quality-control records
  • Details of product recalls or supply chain interventions
  • Corrective and preventive measures implemented to address the issue

Nestlé Responds

Responding to the allegations, Nestlé India denied the claims and stated:

“We categorically reject the allegations circulating on media basis an unverified account regarding the presence of infestation allegedly in MAGGI noodles. We are yet to receive the complaint sample from the complainant as the account is unreachable.”

The company added that it has already submitted a detailed representation to the authorities, including quality records, market sample test reports, and relevant batch details.

Focus on Consumer Safety

The latest action highlights FSSAI’s increasing reliance on consumer feedback and social media monitoring to identify potential food safety concerns.

The regulator has reiterated that all food business operators must maintain robust quality-control systems, adhere to hygiene and sanitation requirements, and respond promptly to consumer complaints.

The issuance of notices does not imply confirmation of violations. The investigation process will determine whether any lapses occurred and whether further regulatory action is warranted.

FSSAI’s proactive approach reflects its broader commitment to strengthening food safety standards, improving accountability, and protecting consumer interests across India’s food ecosystem.
