The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an important regulatory order withdrawing the existing method used for determining fruit content in fruit juices. The decision was announced through an order issued by the Quality Assurance Division of FSSAI and takes immediate effect.
According to the order, Method No. 2.11, which was prescribed in the Manual of Methods of Analysis of Foods – Fruit and Vegetable Products, has been officially withdrawn. The method was previously used by food testing laboratories for assessing fruit content in fruit juice products.
To ensure continuity in testing and regulatory compliance, FSSAI has allowed laboratories to adopt validated analytical methods recognized by reputed national and international organizations until a revised method is approved by the Authority. These include methods prescribed by AOAC International, ISO, Codex Alimentarius, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and other internationally recognized regulatory agencies.
The order directs all FSSAI-notified food testing laboratories and State Food Testing Laboratories to comply with the revised requirements immediately. The move is expected to ensure the use of scientifically validated and globally accepted testing procedures while FSSAI works on developing an updated method for fruit content determination.
Industry experts believe the decision will help maintain testing accuracy and regulatory consistency, while providing laboratories with the flexibility to use internationally recognized analytical standards during the transition period.
The order has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority and is signed by Dr. Satyen Kumar Panda, Advisor (QA), FSSAI.
