In a significant move aimed at streamlining regulatory processes, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced that certain food products will no longer require mandatory BIS/ISI and AGMARK certifications. This decision, part of the FSS (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, aligns with the “One Nation, One Commodity, One Regulator” policy, promoting ease of doing business in India’s food industry.
Key Highlights of the Notification
- BIS/ISI and AGMARK Certifications No Longer Compulsory: Effective from April 28, 2023, this policy change removes the mandatory BIS/ISI and AGMARK certification requirements for several food items, including packaged drinking water, mineral water, milk powders, condensed milks, and infant foods. Previously required for these categories, certifications are now optional, granting manufacturers more flexibility in meeting compliance standards.
- Focus on Simplifying Regulations: The FSSAI’s recent adjustments aim to foster a regulatory framework that simplifies processes for businesses and ensures consistent compliance. Under this policy, the FSSAI serves as the primary regulatory authority for food safety, eliminating the need for additional certifications.
- Examples of Affected Products: With this change, items like packaged drinking water, mineral water, milk powders, and condensed milks no longer require BIS or ISI certifications. Additionally, AGMARK certification, previously mandatory for blended edible vegetable oils and fat spreads, is now non-compulsory.
This change is expected to ease operational costs and reduce bureaucratic requirements for food producers, ensuring the FSSAI remains the single regulatory body overseeing food safety standards.
