The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all States and Union Territories (UTs) to intensify surveillance on Dairy Analogues throughout March, coinciding with the ongoing festive season. This proactive measure aims to prevent food adulteration, misrepresentation, and ensure consumer safety during the period of heightened demand for dairy products.
Increased Surveillance Amid Festive Rush
The directive is part of FSSAI’s product-specific monthly surveillance drives designed to combat food adulteration and ensure compliance with food safety regulations. Given the spike in dairy consumption during festivities, the focus this month is specifically on Dairy Analogues, which are often misrepresented as genuine dairy products.

What Are Dairy Analogues?
According to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, Dairy Analogues are products where non-milk constituents replace milk components partially or entirely. These products resemble milk or milk-based items in appearance, texture, and functionality but do not meet the compositional standards of genuine dairy products.
For example, when vegetable oil, fat, or protein substitutes major milk constituents like milk fat or milk protein, the resulting product is classified as an analogue. As per Sub-Regulation 2.1.1.3(f) of the FSSAI regulations, such products must not be misrepresented as milk, milk products, or composite milk products.
FSSAI’s Stand on Mislabeling and Adulteration
With growing concerns about the misrepresentation of Dairy Analogues as genuine milk products, FSSAI has directed State food safety authorities to:
- Conduct extensive testing of dairy products available in the market.
- Scrutinize labeling practices to prevent deceptive packaging and branding.
- Ensure strict compliance with existing food safety and labeling regulations.
Protecting Consumer Rights
FSSAI’s crackdown aims to safeguard consumer interests by preventing them from being misled by improperly labeled or adulterated products. The authority has reiterated its commitment to enforcing stringent standards to promote food safety, regulatory compliance, and consumer protection.
As the festive season continues, consumers are encouraged to carefully check labels and purchase products from reputable sources to avoid falling prey to misrepresented Dairy Analogues.
