Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced a major push to strengthen the dairy sector in Ladakh, including the establishment of a 50,000 litres per day (LPD) milk processing plant in Leh.
Speaking at events in Leh and Kargil, he highlighted the government’s focus on building sustainable livelihoods for farmers in high-altitude regions, where agriculture options are limited but dairy can offer consistent income.
Dairy Sector Growth in India
Amit Shah pointed out the impressive rise in India’s milk production:
- 📈 From 143 million tonnes (2014–15)
- 📈 To around 248 million tonnes (2024–25)
➡️ Nearly 70% growth in a decade
This growth reflects India’s strengthening position as the world’s largest milk producer, driven by better infrastructure, cooperative models, and policy support.
Why Ladakh Dairy Push Matters
- Supports local farmers & rural employment
- Reduces dependency on imported dairy products in remote regions
- Encourages self-sufficiency in extreme climates
- Builds cold-chain and processing infrastructure in Ladakh
The Leh dairy plant is expected to be a game-changer for the region, opening new income opportunities while ensuring a steady supply of milk and dairy products.
