The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken action against CG Foods India, the company behind the popular Wai Wai instant-noodle brand, after food safety inspectors reportedly found serious hygiene and food-handling violations at one of its manufacturing facilities in Rajasthan.
According to a Reuters report cited by India Today, inspectors found broken noodles collected from the factory floor being reprocessed into bhujia without heat treatment. The findings have raised concerns over hygiene practices and the handling of food materials at the facility.
Broken noodles found on factory floor
During the inspection, authorities reportedly found that floor-collected broken noodles were being used in the production of bhujia, a popular fried Indian snack.
FSSAI stated that the facility was “re-processing floor-collected broken noodles into bhujia without heat treatment.”
The investigation reportedly focused on two Wai Wai-branded bhujia products manufactured at the facility.
The use of food material collected from the factory floor, particularly without an appropriate heat-treatment step, can create food-safety concerns because of the potential for contamination during handling and processing.
Nearly 32,000 kg of stock seized
As part of the enforcement action, authorities reportedly seized nearly 32,000 kg of stock from the facility.
Inspectors also found 1,925 boxes of expired finished products during the raid.
FSSAI has said that legal proceedings have been initiated against the food business operator. Samples from the facility were also collected for testing as part of the investigation.
The action means the issue could now move beyond the initial inspection, with laboratory testing and regulatory proceedings expected to determine the next steps.
CG Foods India and Wai Wai
The factory is operated by CG Foods India, which is part of CG Corp Global, the business group led by Nepalese billionaire Binod Chaudhary.
Chaudhary is widely associated with the Wai Wai brand, which has become one of the best-known instant-noodle brands in India and several international markets.
The latest regulatory action, however, relates specifically to the food-safety findings at the Rajasthan facility and the products identified during the inspection.
Comes amid wider food-safety crackdown
The action against CG Foods comes at a time when food-safety authorities across India are increasing inspections and enforcement against food businesses over hygiene, quality and regulatory compliance.
In recent weeks, authorities have also taken action against restaurants and food outlets over alleged food-safety violations.
Maharashtra has been particularly active in conducting inspections. In a recent case, officials reportedly discovered expired and nearly expired consumer products with allegedly altered expiry dates and nutrition labels at a warehouse in Navi Mumbai.
The products reportedly included brands such as Nestlé, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Unilever.
The developments highlight the increasing scrutiny being placed on food manufacturers, restaurants, warehouses and other businesses involved in the food supply chain.
What happens next?
Following the Rajasthan inspection, samples collected by authorities will be tested, while legal proceedings against the food business operator will continue.
The case also highlights the importance of maintaining strict controls over raw-material handling, production-floor hygiene, food reprocessing and finished-product shelf life.
For food manufacturers, proper segregation of waste and production materials, documented reprocessing procedures, effective sanitation and compliance with food-safety standards are critical to preventing contamination and protecting consumers.
