The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the food licence of M/s Park Plaza (A Unit of Mahagun Hotels Pvt. Ltd.), located in Shahdara, Delhi, with immediate effect following the detection of multiple serious food safety violations during an inspection conducted by the FSSAI Northern Regional Office. The action has been taken in the interest of public health after inspectors identified several critical non-compliances inside the food establishment.
Major Violations Found During Inspection
According to FSSAI, the inspection revealed widespread hygiene failures and unsafe food handling practices, including:
- Use of heavily degraded black cooking oil for frying food.
- Water leakage, stagnant water, and severe infestation of flies and cockroaches in food preparation areas.
- Fungal growth on tomatoes and beetroot, along with spoiled lemons kept for use.
- No proper segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, ingredients, or utensils, creating a high risk of cross-contamination.
- A live pest (earworm) found inside the food preparation area.
- Around 63.60 kg of expired food products stored for food preparation.
- Food handlers with open wounds actively involved in preparing food.
- A hairnet discovered inside a cocoa powder storage container used for sprinkling.
- Drinking water bottles being refilled without proper washing or sanitisation.
- Kitchen equipment, including knives, mixers, and food-contact surfaces, found inadequately cleaned, posing immediate microbial contamination risks.
FSSAI stated that these violations represent serious breaches of food safety and hygiene standards and warranted immediate regulatory intervention.
Immediate Enforcement Measures
Following the inspection, FSSAI has ordered:
- Immediate suspension of the food licence for 15 days.
- The Food Business Operator (FBO) must stop all food business operations immediately.
- The establishment has been directed to rectify all deficiencies within 15 days and submit a detailed compliance report supported by documentary evidence.
The authority has also warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period may result in further legal proceedings, including cancellation of the FSSAI licence.
FSSAI Reinforces Food Safety Compliance
The enforcement action reflects FSSAI’s continued focus on strengthening food safety standards across the country. The regulator has reiterated that food businesses must strictly comply with hygiene, sanitation, storage, and food handling requirements to safeguard consumer health. Regular inspections and strict enforcement remain central to ensuring safe food reaches consumers.
