Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has dismantled an inter-state network allegedly involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit ghee across Delhi and Haryana.
The operation, carried out by FSSAI’s Northern Regional Office on 17 June 2026, resulted in the seizure of thousands of litres of suspected adulterated ghee and raw materials used in its manufacture.
Investigation Triggered by Digital Advertisements
According to officials, the crackdown began after authorities identified online advertisements promoting premium-quality ghee without displaying mandatory FSSAI licence details.
Suspecting regulatory violations, FSSAI initiated a decoy purchase operation and collected samples for laboratory analysis.
The samples were tested at a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited laboratory, where reports allegedly confirmed the presence of vegetable oils and other non-dairy constituents in products marketed as pure ghee.
Coordinated Raids Across Two States
Following the laboratory findings, FSSAI officials conducted coordinated raids at multiple locations in Delhi and Haryana.
Seizure in Dwarka, Delhi
During inspections in Dwarka, officials seized:
- Approximately 1,500 litres of suspected adulterated ghee
- Around 1,020 litres of raw material oil believed to be used in manufacturing counterfeit products
Major Recovery in Sonipat, Haryana
At a separate location in Sonipat, authorities recovered more than 4,000 litres of packaged counterfeit ghee.
Officials have also lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) to facilitate further investigation and identify individuals involved in the illicit supply chain.
FSSAI Intensifies Fight Against Food Adulteration
The latest operation highlights FSSAI’s continued efforts to combat food fraud and strengthen consumer protection across India.
Food adulteration remains a serious public health concern, particularly when counterfeit products are marketed as premium food items. Consumption of adulterated dairy products may expose consumers to health risks due to the presence of unauthorized ingredients and substandard manufacturing practices.
FSSAI has urged consumers to verify product labels, check licence numbers, and purchase food items only from trusted and authorised sources.
The authority has reiterated its commitment to taking strict action against individuals and businesses involved in the manufacture and sale of adulterated food products.
As investigations continue, further enforcement measures are expected against those connected to the network.
