India’s Biggest Food Export Rejections and Import Bans (2020–2026)

Import Bans

India is one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural and food products, supplying spices, rice, seafood, fruits, and processed foods to more than 200 countries. However, over the past decade, several high-profile export rejections, recalls, and import suspensions have raised concerns about food safety compliance, documentation, and phytosanitary standards.

From the European sesame seed crisis to the recent suspension of mango exports by Japan, these incidents serve as important lessons for Indian exporters striving to compete in global markets.

1. Sesame Seed Ethylene Oxide (2020–2021)

One of the biggest food safety incidents involving Indian exports occurred when European authorities detected ethylene oxide residues in sesame seeds exported from India. The contamination triggered hundreds of product recalls across Europe because sesame seeds were widely used in bakery products, snacks, and processed foods.

Reason: Ethylene oxide contamination above permitted limits.

2. MDH and Everest Spice Recall Controversy (2024)

In 2024, food regulators in Hong Kong suspended the sale of several spice products manufactured by MDH and Everest after detecting elevated levels of ethylene oxide. Singapore also recalled a batch of Everest Fish Curry Masala.

The issue attracted global attention, prompting investigations and increased scrutiny of Indian spice exports by several countries. India subsequently initiated inspections and testing of spice manufacturing facilities.

Reason: Alleged presence of ethylene oxide residues.

3. United States Rejects 15 Indian Mango Shipments (2025)

In May 2025, U.S. authorities rejected at least 15 consignments of Indian mangoes arriving at airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta. Exporters were instructed to either re-export or destroy the shipments. Due to the perishable nature of mangoes and the high cost of return shipping, the consignments were destroyed, resulting in estimated losses of nearly $500,000. Authorities cited documentation and certification errors linked to mandatory irradiation procedures.

Reason: Documentation and certification lapses.

4. Shrimp Export Rejections in International Markets

Indian shrimp exports have periodically faced rejection in international markets, particularly due to the detection of banned antibiotic residues. Seafood remains one of India’s most valuable agricultural exports, making compliance with importing-country regulations critical for exporters.

Reason: Detection of prohibited veterinary drug and antibiotic residues.

5. Japan Suspends Indian Mango Imports (2026)

In one of the most significant export setbacks of 2026, Japan temporarily suspended imports of fresh Indian mangoes after quarantine officials identified deficiencies in fumigation, disinfection, and pest-control procedures at approved treatment facilities. The suspension affected premium varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Banganapalli, ending nearly two decades of uninterrupted access to the Japanese market. Japanese authorities maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy toward invasive pests such as fruit flies.

Reason: Non-compliance with phytosanitary and pest-control requirements.

6. China Rejects Indian Rice Consignments

China has periodically rejected Indian rice consignments and suspended certain exporters after alleging the presence of genetically modified material in shipments. The issue highlighted the growing importance of traceability, testing, and compliance with destination-country import requirements.

Reason: Alleged detection of genetically modified material and regulatory non-compliance.

7. Nepal Mango Import Controversy (2026)

Reports initially suggested Nepal had restricted Indian mango imports due to concerns regarding pesticide residues and quarantine measures. However, both the Government of Nepal and the Government of India later clarified that no ban had been imposed. Imports continue subject to compliance with phytosanitary requirements and certification procedures.

Key Lessons for Indian Exporters

The major reasons behind food export rejections over the past decade include:

  • Excess pesticide residues
  • Ethylene oxide contamination
  • Antibiotic residues in seafood
  • Documentation and certification errors
  • Non-compliance with quarantine requirements
  • Inadequate traceability systems
  • Labeling and regulatory violations

As global food safety standards become increasingly stringent, Indian exporters must invest in stronger quality assurance systems, laboratory testing, traceability, and regulatory compliance to protect market access and maintain India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of food products.
