FSSAI Removes Mandatory RDA Declaration for Infant Nutrition Labels

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced new labeling regulations for infant nutrition products while also standardizing branding requirements for fortified foods across India.

According to the latest notification, infant food products will no longer be required to declare the “per serve percentage contribution” to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) on product labels.

FSSAI clarified that infant nutrition products are often consumed under medical supervision and may not align with standard adult nutrition percentage calculations commonly displayed on packaged food labels. The move is expected to reduce confusion and improve the relevance of nutritional information for consumers and healthcare professionals.

In a parallel development, the food regulator has also introduced standardized branding guidelines for fortified food products.

Fortified foods are products enriched with essential vitamins and minerals to help address nutritional deficiencies and improve public health outcomes.

Under the revised rules, manufacturers must now prominently display the official fortification logo along with the phrase “fortified with…” followed by the name of the added nutrient on packaging labels.

Additionally, brands have been permitted to use the tagline “Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan” beneath the fortification logo to strengthen consumer awareness regarding nutritional benefits.

The latest amendments are aimed at improving label clarity, ensuring better consumer understanding, and making fortified food products easier to identify in the market.
