The government of Andhra Pradesh, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is preparing to launch a first-of-its-kind Mushroom Mission with a massive ₹13,000 crore investment. The goal is simple but ambitious: make Andhra Pradesh the largest mushroom-producing state in India.
Key Highlights
- Target Production: 67,500 tonnes annually
- Current Leader: Bihar (~45,000 tonnes)
- Total Investment: ₹13,000 crore
- Subsidy Support: ₹5,184 crore (≈40% of total cost)
Focus on Rural Growth
The mission is designed to boost self-employment and rural livelihoods:
- Around 1.62 lakh small & medium units (≈5,000 sq ft each)
- Encouragement for Self-Help Groups (SHGs), especially rural women
- Additional large-scale units to strengthen supply chains and processing
Mushroom Varieties in Focus
- Milky Mushroom – heat-resistant, ideal for Indian climate
- Paddy Straw Mushroom – fast-growing, low-cost
- Button Mushroom – high market demand
Economic & Export Potential
- Mushrooms may be classified as agricultural produce, enabling policy support
- Strong export opportunities, especially in Gulf markets
- Aims to replicate the success of initiatives like International Year of Millets 2023 by building a new agri-value chain
Why This Matters
This mission isn’t just about mushrooms—it’s about:
- Income diversification for farmers
- Women empowerment through SHGs
- Agri-entrepreneurship at scale
- Positioning Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in niche agriculture
If executed well, this could turn mushrooms into the next big agri success story in India.
