The Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI, Shri Rajit Punhani, has called for a nationwide crackdown on high-risk food commodities during the 49th meeting of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) held in Gangtok, Sikkim.
Addressing Commissioners of Food Safety and senior officials from States and Union Territories, he emphasized the need for stronger on-ground enforcement, risk-based inspections, and sustained surveillance drives. Special focus was directed towards high-risk categories including milk and milk products, edible oils, spices, and honey.
Shri Punhani urged States/UTs to take strict and visible action against non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOs) and regularly share enforcement updates. He highlighted that proactive public disclosure of actions taken would help deter violations and strengthen consumer confidence.
The CEO also stressed the urgent need to expedite recruitment to fill vacant posts of Food Safety Officers and technical staff to enhance inspection coverage and enforcement intensity. He underscored the importance of time-bound grievance redressal mechanisms and improved coordination between FSSAI and State authorities.
The meeting reaffirmed the collective commitment of FSSAI and States/UTs to build a stronger, enforcement-led, and consumer-centric food safety ecosystem across India.
