The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stepped up its statewide food safety enforcement, taking decisive action against three prominent food businesses in Mumbai and Nagpur after inspections revealed serious violations of hygiene and food safety regulations. The action is part of the state’s ongoing ‘Safe Food Safe Maharashtra’ initiative aimed at ensuring consumers receive safe and hygienic food.
FDA Suspends Licence of Mumbai’s Iconic Ice Cream Parlour
In Mumbai, the FDA ordered the suspension of the licence of the well-known K Rustom Ice Cream Parlour near Churchgate after a surprise inspection reportedly uncovered multiple food safety concerns.
Officials found expired flavouring ingredients that were allegedly being stored on the premises, along with unhygienic conditions, including the presence of rodents and insects. The inspection team also raised concerns regarding food handling and storage practices.
The expired ingredients were immediately disposed of under the supervision of FDA officials, while food samples were collected for laboratory testing. The outlet has been directed to remain closed until test reports are received and all regulatory requirements are met.
Action Against Two Food Manufacturing Units in Nagpur
The enforcement drive also reached Nagpur, where the FDA suspended the licences of Indore Namkeen Products and Shri Heera Sweets following inspections at their manufacturing facilities.
At Indore Namkeen Products, inspectors reportedly identified several non-compliance issues, including spoiled food items, expired stock, inadequate sanitation, improper storage practices, missing product labelling, and the reuse of food containers. During the operation, approximately 273 kilograms of food products considered unfit for consumption were destroyed.
Meanwhile, the inspection at Shri Heera Sweets revealed unsanitary conditions inside the production area, including rodent activity, dust accumulation, rusted equipment, and poor overall maintenance. The production unit has been instructed to suspend operations until all deficiencies are rectified and approved by the FDA.

Stronger Enforcement to Protect Consumers
The Maharashtra FDA has stated that these inspections are part of its broader effort to strengthen compliance with food safety standards across the state. Food businesses have been reminded to strictly follow the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, maintain hygienic production environments, and ensure that only safe, quality food reaches consumers.
The department has indicated that strict regulatory action will continue against establishments found violating food safety norms, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding public health through regular inspections and enforcement measures.
