The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has granted a three-month extension to food business operators (FBOs) to comply with the revised manufacturing standards for meat sausages, offering temporary relief to the meat processing industry.
The updated rules—introduced under the 2025 First Amendment Regulations—were originally scheduled to come into force on February 1, 2026. Following industry representations, the compliance deadline has now been deferred to May 1, 2026.
Industry Feedback Prompted Review
Officials said the decision was taken after extensive feedback from stakeholders across the meat processing sector. Since the amendments were notified in July 2025, manufacturers had raised concerns about the limited transition period available to implement wide-ranging operational changes.
Industry bodies pointed to multiple hurdles, including:
- Reformulating existing products to meet revised additive limits and protein specifications
- Upgrading processing lines to comply with stricter hygiene and preparation norms
- Clearing inventory manufactured under the older standards to avoid financial losses
These combined challenges, stakeholders argued, required additional time for smooth implementation without disrupting supply chains.
Aim: Uniform Safety and Quality
An official familiar with the development noted that the extension was granted to ensure the sector is fully prepared before enforcement begins. The regulator wants to make sure that once the norms take effect, every product available in the market conforms to the upgraded safety and quality benchmarks.
The original notification issued on July 10, 2025 had set February 2026 as the target for implementation. With the revised timeline, FBOs now have until May 1, 2026 to align their operations with the new standards.
The move is expected to provide manufacturers with breathing room while maintaining the regulator’s long-term objective of strengthening food safety and consumer confidence in processed meat products.
