Meghalaya is brewing big ambitions for its coffee sector, with the state government unveiling plans to double coffee production and position the region as a premium hub for specialty coffee in India and abroad.
At a stakeholders’ workshop held on Wednesday, officials detailed a comprehensive strategy that combines government support, farmer training, private sector partnerships, and improved processing capabilities.
The initiative, launched just last year, has already expanded coffee cultivation to 452 hectares — including 293 hectares of Robusta and 159 hectares of Arabica. The government is now targeting an additional 248 hectares in 2025 to sustain the growth momentum.
Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of the Soil and Water Conservation Department, highlighted Meghalaya’s favourable climate, fertile soil, and established organic farming practices as key advantages for attracting investment in processing infrastructure and market linkages.
“Farmers excel in production but face challenges in accessing markets and adding value to their produce. Strategic partnerships can bridge this gap,” he said.
To strengthen the supply chain, the state has formed 17 Coffee Producer Groups and two Coffee Cooperative Societies, giving farmers greater bargaining power. Private players like Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters have joined the effort, bringing expertise in specialty coffee marketing.
A unique part of the plan is the launch of the ‘Meghalaya Collectives’ umbrella brand, which will give each coffee collective its own traceable identity while offering a unified market presence.
Joram Beda, CEO of the Meghalaya State Watershed and Wasteland Development Agency, emphasised the importance of value addition through advanced processing to make Meghalaya a significant player in the global coffee market.
The Coffee Board, a long-standing partner in Meghalaya’s coffee development, continues to provide technical support, infrastructure like drying beds, and market access. However, farmers at the workshop pointed out persistent issues, including pest management and adoption of improved practices.
This coffee push is part of Meghalaya’s wider strategy to promote specialty crops that align with its natural advantages, offering sustainable livelihoods and tapping into the premium segment of India’s coffee industry.
The workshop closed with detailed discussions on future strategies, underscoring the collaborative approach between government, private sector, and farming communities to make Meghalaya’s coffee dreams a reality.
