No More Samosas & Chai Karnataka Pushes Healthy Food in Govt Meetings

Karnataka

The Karnataka Government has issued a new nutrition advisory to promote healthier eating habits during official meetings and events. The move focuses on improving workplace wellness by replacing commonly served unhealthy items with more nutritious alternatives.

Under the guidelines, departments are advised to avoid fried snacks, milk tea, and coffee, along with processed and high-sugar foods. Instead, the emphasis is on millet-based snacks, fresh fruits, salads, sprouts, and roasted nuts, all of which are rich in fibre and low in fat. Beverages like green tea and low-fat buttermilk are recommended, while drinking water should be served in glass or steel containers, avoiding plastic.

For larger events, the advisory suggests low-oil, low-sugar meals, mandating the inclusion of millets and encouraging the use of brown rice over white rice. Non-vegetarian options, if served, should be limited to lean, well-cooked meat.

The initiative aligns with the World Health Organization definition of health, which includes physical, mental, and social well-being, highlighting nutrition as a key part of preventive healthcare.

Additionally, the government has urged departments to maintain strict hygiene standards and support local sourcing by procuring food from self-help groups, cottage industries, and nutri-gardens.
