Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has given new directions emphasizing on Section 16(5) of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. It sheds light on operationalization of Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives)Amendment Regulations regarding the standard of Fortified Rice Kernel.
Notably, FSSAI had framed draft food safety and standards amendment regulations w.r.t the standards of fortified rice kernel and the same has been drafted and notified in the Gazette of India on 25th May 2022.
It is important to note here that the draft amendment regulations are under the process of draft consultation from the stakeholders. Consequently, the apex body of food safety has considered the comments of stakeholders. The final notification in the Gazette of India might take some more time.
Amid this, in order to strengthen the national level fortification programme and its implementation it has been decided to operationalize the provisions related to fortified rice kernel Rice as provided in the ANNEXURE-1, with immediate effect.
This has been issued with the approval of the competent authority in exercise of the powers vested under section 18(2) (d) read with 16(5) of Food safety and Standards Act 2006.
