The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken regulatory action against multiple food businesses over food safety non-compliances, hygiene deficiencies and misleading product claims.
The actions include an improvement notice to AB Hotels Limited (Radisson Blu Hotel, New Delhi), suspension of the licence of DNV Food Products Limited, cancellation of the licence of Jhanvitanni, and notices to Gemini Edibles & Fats India Limited, Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited (BigBasket) and Flipkart India Private Limited over claims associated with Freedom Cooking Rice Bran Oil.
Key Regulatory Actions
1. Radisson Blu Hotel, New Delhi
AB Hotels Limited received an improvement notice following observations concerning poor maintenance, inadequate cleaning and sanitation, pest activity, improper food segregation and deficiencies in food procurement and handling practices. The company was directed to implement corrective measures and submit an Action Taken Report.
2. DNV Food Products Limited
FSSAI suspended the company’s licence with immediate effect following reported hygiene and sanitation deficiencies at its food premises. Observations included unhygienic processing and storage conditions, inadequate protective practices among food handlers, corrosion on equipment and missing documentation. The suspension applies to food business activities covered by the licence until further orders.
3. Jhanvitanni
The FSSAI licence of Jhanvitanni was cancelled with immediate effect following continued non-compliance with food safety requirements and the reported operation of the business despite an earlier licence suspension. The business was directed to stop food business activities under the cancelled licence.
4. Freedom Cooking Rice Bran Oil
FSSAI issued notices to Gemini Edibles & Fats India Limited, Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited (BigBasket) and Flipkart India Private Limited regarding claims such as cholesterol reduction and heart-health benefits associated with Freedom Cooking Rice Bran Oil.
According to the notice, these claims were not covered or permitted under the applicable Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. The notice also raised a licensing concern regarding Gemini Edibles & Fats India Limited’s e-commerce activities.
What This Means for Food Businesses
These actions highlight the importance of maintaining hygienic premises, implementing effective food safety management systems, complying with licensing conditions and ensuring that product claims are scientifically supported and legally permitted.
Food businesses must also maintain appropriate records, follow food handling and storage requirements, and address regulatory observations within the prescribed timelines.
FSSAI continues to emphasise compliance with food safety requirements to protect public health and consumer interests.
