The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed Everest Food Products Pvt Ltd to immediately recall a batch of pre-packed cumin powder after laboratory testing confirmed that the product was unsafe due to pesticide residues exceeding prescribed limits.
The action follows a regulatory sample collected from the premises of Riverside Resorts & Holiday Homes Pvt Ltd in Goa.
Pesticide Residues Found Above Permitted Limits
According to FSSAI, the Food Analyst’s report detected residues of Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam in the cumin powder at levels exceeding the prescribed maximum residue limits.
The sample was subsequently declared “UNSAFE” under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Everest Food Products was given an opportunity to appeal the findings. Following the appeal, the sample was referred to a Referral Food Laboratory for further examination.
The referral laboratory confirmed the earlier findings and again declared the sample unsafe after detecting Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam above the prescribed limits.
Entire Implicated Batch Ordered for Recall
Based on the confirmed laboratory findings, FSSAI directed Everest Food Products to immediately recall the entire implicated batch of pre-packed cumin powder from the market.
The company has also been instructed to:
- Maintain complete records of the recalled product
- Submit recall-related reports to the regulator
- Undertake corrective measures
- Take steps to prevent recurrence of the issue
- Submit a compliance report after completing the recall
The action highlights the importance of controlling pesticide residues in spices and ensuring that food products placed on the market comply with established food safety standards.
FSSAI Suspends Creative Bakers Licence
In a separate enforcement action announced by FSSAI, the regulator also suspended the food licence of Creative Bakers and Confectioners Pvt Ltd with immediate effect.
The suspension was attributed to severe hygiene deficiencies identified during regulatory action.
FSSAI said it continues to strengthen enforcement and regulatory compliance measures to safeguard consumer health across the country.
The latest actions come as the food regulator has intensified enforcement against food business operators and other entities involved in the food supply chain, while increasingly informing consumers about regulatory actions through public communications.
