The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has raised concerns about the growing issue of jaggery adulteration in India and shared a simple home test that consumers can use to check its purity.
Jaggery, widely consumed across Indian households as a natural alternative to sugar, is traditionally made by boiling sugarcane juice until it solidifies into blocks. The traditional process does not require chemical additives. However, reports indicate that some vendors are adding unauthorized substances to improve appearance or increase weight.
Common Adulterants Found in Jaggery
Food safety experts warn that jaggery sold in markets may sometimes be mixed with substances such as:
- Chalk powder
- Chemical bleaching agents
- Artificial coloring substances
These adulterants are often used to make jaggery appear brighter or heavier, increasing profits for sellers. However, regular consumption of adulterated jaggery can pose potential health risks over time.
FSSAI’s Simple Home Test for Jaggery Purity
To help consumers detect adulteration, FSSAI has suggested a quick test that can be performed at home in under two minutes.
Steps to follow:
- Take a small piece of jaggery.
- Drop it into a glass of clean water.
- Wait for a few minutes and observe the result.
Result interpretation:
- If the jaggery dissolves completely without leaving residue, it is likely pure.
- If particles settle at the bottom of the glass, it may indicate adulteration.
This test helps identify insoluble adulterants such as chalk powder that do not dissolve in water.
How to Identify Pure Jaggery While Buying
Consumers can also look for a few visual indicators before purchasing jaggery from the market:
- Color: Pure jaggery usually ranges from golden brown to dark brown. Extremely bright yellow jaggery may indicate chemical processing.
- Texture: Authentic jaggery feels solid but slightly soft when broken.
- Taste: It should have a naturally sweet taste without any chemical aftertaste.
Importance of Consumer Awareness
Food safety authorities emphasize that awareness among consumers is crucial to reduce the circulation of adulterated food products in the market. Simple home tests and careful purchasing decisions can help people avoid potentially harmful products.
As jaggery continues to be a staple sweetener in Indian kitchens, ensuring its purity remains essential for protecting public health.
