In a major crackdown on food adulteration, the Gujarat Food Safety Department raided an illegal godown in Banaskantha and seized over 5 tons of spurious ghee, valued at around ₹35 lakh.
The raid exposed that the facility was running without a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license, making its operations completely illegal. Authorities reported that the seized stock was being circulated in the market under false labels, posing a serious threat to consumer health.
This action comes as part of FSSAI’s nationwide campaign against dairy adulteration, where several similar raids have been carried out across India in recent months. Food safety officials have intensified checks on milk and milk-based products due to rising concerns about adulteration during festive seasons, when demand for ghee and sweets is high.
Officials have confirmed that samples from the seized stock will undergo laboratory testing to determine the extent of adulteration. Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in this illegal activity.
Why It Matters
Adulterated ghee not only cheats consumers financially but can also cause severe health issues, including digestive problems, food poisoning, and long-term health risks. The FSSAI urges citizens to buy dairy products only from trusted brands and to check for the FSSAI license number on packaging before making purchases.
