In a major move to clamp down on food adulteration, the Food Safety Department conducted a surprise inspection in Rampur Maniharan, Saharanpur district, uncovering serious violations in local dairy units. Acting on specific inputs, officials raided multiple unauthorized and unhygienic paneer (cottage cheese) and dairy production units operating without the mandatory food licenses.
During the raid, over 1200 kilograms of paneer and 4500 litres of adulterated milk were seized and destroyed on the spot. The inspection team found alarming lapses in hygiene, including the use of contaminated water and substandard milk for production, as well as unsafe storage practices that posed significant health risks to consumers.
Operating Without License and Hygiene
Most of the dairy units targeted during the operation were running illegally without FSSAI licenses, a direct violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act. These factories were also found to be operating in extremely unhygienic conditions, raising serious concerns about public health and safety.
Food Safety Officers noted that the units were producing large volumes of paneer and distributing them to local markets and eateries, potentially endangering thousands of unsuspecting consumers. Samples have been collected for further lab testing, and legal proceedings under the relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act are underway.
FSSAI’s Statewide Drive Against Food Adulteration
The raid is part of a larger statewide crackdown initiated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to curb food adulteration, especially in high-risk products like dairy, oil, sweets, and spices. Uttar Pradesh has seen a spate of such inspections in recent months, with authorities intensifying efforts to clean up the supply chain ahead of the festive season.
FSSAI officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring that only safe, hygienic, and quality food reaches consumers. “We will not tolerate those who put public health at risk for profit. Strict action will continue against all violators,” said one official during the raid.
A Wake-Up Call for Consumers and Businesses
This incident serves as a wake-up call for both consumers and food business operators. Consumers are urged to be vigilant and report any suspected cases of food adulteration to the local food safety authorities. Meanwhile, food businesses are reminded to obtain the necessary licenses, maintain hygiene standards, and follow food safety regulations strictly.
The crackdown in Saharanpur reflects FSSAI’s broader mission to build a safe and transparent food system in India. With continued enforcement and public cooperation, authorities hope to eliminate adulteration from the roots and ensure better food safety outcomes for all.
