Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) under section 18(2)(d) in section 16(5) of Food Safety and Standards Act emphasized on operationalization of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations 2021 relating to limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish.
Notably, FSSAI in exercise of the power conferred under section 92 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 framed draft Food Safety and Standards( Food Products Standards and Food Additives ) Amendment Regulations 2021 that specified limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish and the same were operationalized on 10.02.2020 and subsequently re-operationalised vide directions dated 21.08.2020 , 16.11.2020 and 13.09.2021.
The final regulations are yet to be finalized before being notified and enforced.
In order to ensure fair practices in food safety and public health interest in food business operations . It has been decided to re- operationalise the provisions of these regulations with effect from 13.03.2022 and food business operators shall comply with these provisions. This has been issued by the FSSAI with approval of all the competent authorities in exercise of the powers under section 18 (2) (d) and 16 (5) of the Food safety and Standards Act, 2006.
