The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken serious note of reports about restaurants in Karnataka using plastic sheets in the steaming process of idlis. In response, the regulatory body has instructed the Karnataka State Food Safety Department to investigate the matter and take immediate action against violators.
The use of plastic sheets in food preparation, especially under high temperatures, raises significant health concerns. Non-food-grade plastics can release toxic substances such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which may leach into food and pose serious health risks to consumers.
Strict Action Against Violators:
FSSAI has directed Karnataka’s food safety officials to enforce strict measures against Food Business Operators (FBOs) and hotels found violating food safety norms. The authority has also emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene and ensuring that only food-grade materials are used in food preparation.
“The use of low-quality or non-food-grade plastics in cooking is a major concern, especially when exposed to high heat,” said Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI. “We are working closely with state officials to investigate this issue thoroughly and ensure that strict action is taken against those violating safety regulations.”
Health Hazards of Plastic in Cooking:
Plastic contamination in food is a growing concern worldwide. When heated, certain plastics can release harmful chemicals that may cause hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, and long-term health complications. Experts recommend using banana leaves, stainless steel, or approved food-grade alternatives instead of plastic sheets for steaming food.
Ensuring Safe and Hygienic Food Practices:
FSSAI urges restaurants, hotels, and home cooks to follow safe cooking practices. The steaming of idlis and other food items should be done using traditional or FSSAI-approved materials that do not pose a risk of chemical contamination.
Consumers are also encouraged to be vigilant and report any instances of unsafe food practices. The government remains committed to upholding food safety standards and ensuring public health is not compromised.
