Mumbai’s iconic Olympia Coffee House, a 108-year-old establishment in Colaba, has had its food licence suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following an inspection that reportedly found multiple hygiene and food safety violations.
The action came after a consumer complaint prompted an inspection of the café. According to FDA officials, inspectors reported finding a urinal inside the food storage area, along with cockroaches and flies on the premises.
The inspection also reportedly found meat and blood residues inside a refrigerator, raising concerns over sanitation and food storage practices.
Multiple Hygiene Violations Reported
The FDA inspection highlighted several other concerns, including unhygienic food preparation and utensil-washing areas. Officials reportedly observed food being handled directly on the floor and the use of unclean water.
Inspectors also found that raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian food was not adequately separated, creating a potential risk of cross-contamination.
Damaged wooden chopping boards were reportedly being used in the kitchen, while food handlers were also found without appropriate protective clothing.
Licence Suspended
Following the inspection, the FDA suspended Olympia Coffee House’s licence until further notice.
The establishment is among 14 food businesses across Maharashtra against which the FDA has reportedly taken action as part of intensified food safety inspections.
From Celebrity Visit to Food Safety Action
Olympia Coffee House recently attracted widespread attention when filmmaker Christopher Nolan and actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland visited the Colaba café during their Mumbai trip in July.
The Hollywood stars reportedly enjoyed tea, bun maska and desserts at the historic establishment during their visit ahead of the premiere of The Odyssey.
The café has long been known for its traditional Irani and Parsi-style offerings, including mutton keema pav, biryani, kebabs, dal gosht, Irani chai and bun maska.
The latest FDA action has now brought the century-old café into the spotlight for an entirely different reason, highlighting the importance of maintaining food hygiene and safety standards regardless of an establishment’s history or popularity.
